Digital SLR cameras allow much more creative control and flexibility and the resulting photographs will showcase a higher level of professionalism. If you are not familiar with how to use digital SLR cameras, do not be worried. With just a little practice, you can take professional shots. There are many digital SLR cameras to choose from (Canon, Sony, Nikon, etc.), but you won't need the most expensive one on the market. Here is a suggestion for Canon gear:
Canon T3 Camera Body
Entry level digital SLR that shoots 3 photos per second. Also shoots HD video. This camera combined with one of the 50mm lenses produces professional quality photographs that save lives.
Canon 50mm 1.8 II Lens
Great lens for any lighting condition. Produces outstanding results for the price. Allows you to create more intimate pet portraits, focusing on the expression and blurring out unnecessary background details.
Canon 50mm 1.4 Lens
This is the upgraded version of the Canon 50mm 1.8 II lens. A little more costly, but worth it. You don’t need both of these lenses – just one or the other.
SD Memory Card
You’ll need a memory card to store your photos. I’m suggesting an inexpensive option by Transcend.
If you are not able to photograph dogs outdoors in natural light, or indoors near a window, then definitely consider purchasing this indoor lighting kit. The kit provides soft, shadow free illumination and it won’t startle dogs like a flash might. Remember to use a non-distracting backdrop such as sheets or carpet. Good color choices are green or blue.
Adobe Photoshop Elements
Use Photoshop Elements 11 for all your photo needs. Intuitively organize and find photos; edit and enhance them; create custom photo keepsakes; and share via print, the web, and more.
Bescor LED-70 Light
If you are photographing cats in a dark room, then consider using an LED light. Whether the cats are out and about in a free-roaming room, or inside of their cages, this LED light will illuminate without scaring them. Flashes are not a good option for cats indoors because it may scare them, and their retinas will likely respond to the flash, resulting in red-eye, green-eye, yellow-eye, purple-eye, etc.
